Astros Game "KICKSTART Night"

September 10, 2009

It was an early evening of fun, food, and a fantastic performance by our KICKSTART City-Wide Demo Team at the Houston Astros versus Braves baseball game. The event began with an enthusiastic audience surrounding our Demo Team inside the Union Stadium room of the Minute Maid Baseball Stadium. There, the crowd witnessed the captivating display of our student's energetically synchronized demonstrations, as well as individual student demos of power and technique. City Wide gained an even greater audience after moving to the Hallow Burton grass patch where they vigorously performed for the local passerby, displaying all the positive aspects KICKSTART has to offer our youth.

Following the national anthem, a few select member of the City Wide team went with KICKSTART board member Laura True to the center of the field, where Ms. True threw the first pitch of the game.

We also held a silent auction for items donated to us from various contributors, as well as an opportunity to sponsor a child and/or donation to our cause. We were pleased that the event raised over $8,000, and are thankful for every participant involved. Between the funds raised and the community awareness, it was a home run for KICKSTART.

How do you turn an average Saturday morning ride into a street-vibrating full-blown motorcycle extravaganza? Simple. You add Chuck Norris.

And that's exactly what we did. Not even the cold morning drizzle could stop all sorts of bikers around Houston from joining in our event. We had starting locations in Houston, College Station, and Pflugerville, all conglomerating at the restaurant “Papa's on the Lake” in Montgomery, TX. Mr. Norris took the lead on his Harley trike at our Houston location, followed by over 150 bikers, forming a line long enough to have the DPS shut down the highway to give us a smooth ride.

At Papa's, we were fortunate to hear a speech from Mr. Norris, conveying the history, success, and his personal passion for KICKSTART. Following Mr. Norris was an uplifting testimony by Cory Ali – one of our black belt graduates, and a demonstration of raw KICKSTART skill by our popular  “City Wide” demo team. The weather may have been cold, but their karate performance certainly heated things up for our audience. We also held a raffle where registrants won great prizes like gift cards, and even a Total Gym.

Our staff is pleased to have reached a new crowd with our cause, and hopes that the KICKSTART name will spread to areas that we never could have traversed without our biker friends.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the KICKSTART Foundation
